The problem of #gamergate perception in France is that the controversy has been treated by the mainstream media, and not by the specialized press. There were some exceptions to, but it is not really relevant.

It was treated with disregard by copying the US headlines all the way. Of course only the muh soggy knees angle was retained. Most people who have an opinion, take it from there, when it's not the usual condescande about USA.

So it took early the SJWs angle.

For the majority of the video game press, it was the radio silence, except CanardPC. But I remember one of CanardPC journos praising one of the most stupid clickbait article form polygon (you know the one with the same mechanic for kiss/kill, omg think of the womyn!). I gently closed the door after that.

The fact is that some game journalists have drunk the kool-aid and everything that is not favorable to the genders politics / studies is reactionary. Prosaically, we see an attempt on other left-wing media to import the 'rape culture' bullshit (with no success, from far I see). I've seen SJWs on social networks trying to frame the few who speak about #gamergate with those who have opposed the marriage for gays and lesbians few years ago. And nobody want to be libelled because "muh video game".

On the other hand, the French political paradigm is very different from that of the USA. It is a deeply marxist country, in a way that the class war is a widely shared sense (I would love to see, really, a SJW talk about "privilege" with a french worker on strike). The republican ideal does not recognize neither sex nor race nor religion, so it's is very difficult for SJWs to maneuver in these waters. A lot of them are called out for their bullshit on a political level.
