Why do we imprison mentally ill people who committed no crime?

my take on this, based on zero expertise, is that private sector mental hospitals probably make a bunch of money when people are put into their facilities just like private sector prisons. Maybe, MAYBE, they think it's helping rather than hurting. And for some people, I'm sure it is true that it is helping them and they need to be there, but I bet in a ton of cases it's gotta do with money.
