Mitterrand did initially oppose the reunification, but Kohl managed to use his close working relationship with him to his advantage, alleviate his concerns and get the France on board by agreeing to abandon German marks and introduce Euro, a decision that proved to be fantastic for Germany and its export oriented economy.
