I've been told my police in the past that it is a requirement to show identification, and that they are not required to do the same. Online queries seem to suggest this is false; what's actually correct?

/u/twcau in relation to officers ID, in relation to our ID.

The police can request your identity if they suspect you have, in the process or going to potentially commit an offense OR if they believe you have/will be a witness to one. (It's extremely broad).

Key word here is identity, this is not a physical ID, name, DOB, address is your identity. It is a criminal offense to falsify these details.

In the event of operating a vehicle, granted you are operating a normal class C? vehicle on a full drivers license you do not need to prevent your license but if requested present to a station within 24hrs. This does not apply if you are operating a heavy vehicle, on your L/P's, etc.
