I've never heard of this game but just turned on ESPN to see that esports are being casted! Amazing!

Howdy, so as someone said there are two teams of five heroes each in Heroes of the Storm. Each team ultimately wants to destroy the other teams Core (big fancy building in the middle of the base). Destroy the core and you win.

But the Core is protected by two layers of Walls. Your team needs to push past the walls and forts, usually by destroying them, in order to attack the Core.

Since the other team is doing the same you have to split your efforts between offense and defense depending on the situation.

Additionally each map has objectives, accomplishing the objectives give you some kind of boost towards destroying the other teams buildings. Examples are gathing coins or capturing a specific point on the map.

There are also neutral enemies, called Mercs (Mercenaries) scattered around the map, defeating the Mercs gets them to join your side and attack the enemy buildings.

Heroes get stronger and unlock more abilities as the match progresses. Each team has an XP pool which all 5 heroes contribute towards.

Heroes gather xp by defeating enemy heroes and clearing the small computer controlled enemies, usually called minions, who are constantly spawning and walking down the lanes towards the enemy buildings.

Each team has heroes of different roles. There are Warriors, who lead the attack are good at taking damage and surving. Assassins have less health than warriors but do much more damage to their enemies. Support heroes heal or shield their allies, keeping the team alive and fighting for longer. There are also Specialists who have some different stratedgy like being really good at capturing Mercs or destroying buildings.

Teams have different compositions of types depending on their style of play. Generally most teams take at least one warrior and support.
