By zipping down the merge lane while everyone else has merged, you're not only being selfish and reckless but you're actually impeding the flow of traffic overall because people have to slow way down in order to let you in which throws off the pace of traffic and screws others over all to gain a couple of seconds on your trip. Ive also nearly been sideswiped a few times by people who try to zip down the merge lane, going 8x the pace of traffic where it's already taped down to 1/2 a lane. It's NEVER safe to be going substantially faster then the speed of surrounding traffic, what if someone had an emergency and had to pull into the shoulder of the road, both vehicles would be totaled and likely some bodily harm would occur.
