Louis C.K. does a sketch called "Of course... but maybe!" and it's the funniest shit I've ever heard from him.

Okay. Now compare all that to the living conditions at the small farming villages out in the countryside where half of those workers are from. And to the low income portions of Beijing and other giant cities where the other half are from. And to how oil rig workers sleep. And commercial fishermen, and guys on a submarine, and any other job where it's unreasonable to go home at the end of the day because "home" is really far away. Having to sleep in a bunk bed isn't something to commit suicide over. And as I've already said, the workers there are almost 10 times less likely to commit suicide as you and I.

I am definitely not saying I'd want to work at Foxconn. But, your own quote says their wages are comparatively high, enough to live and to send money to their family. And by family they're not (generally) talking about the children of workers, they're talking about the parents and siblings. That's why people work there. Sure, working at Foxconn sucks. But for those people, not working at Foxconn sucks worse.

You will find a lot about how horrible the conditions are there, because they really are a lot worse than most Americans are used to, and because people love the feeling of outrage that a big corporation can do this to people. But the reality is different. The workers come from all over China to work at the big factories. They work for a year or five, save/send money home the whole time, and then during annual holidays (Golden Week) they just don't come back to work and are replaced.

Source: I am an engineer, and I've been in factories like this and worked with factory workers from all over the world.
