[Match Thread] Wigan Athletic - Manchester United

Well, so far:

  • Shaw has looked quite good. Smart going forward, solid at the back and providing intelligent support. Effective positioning as well. Great job.

  • CBs haven't had a lot to do, but Blind did look more comfortable and provided decent passes to start our buildup.

  • Herrera has been trying to get involved as much as possible. Some good runs and good recycling of possession. Was involved in a couple of goal-scoring opportunities, if I recall correctly. Safe passing in central areas, more prone to take risks closer to the box.

  • Mkhitaryan looks decent, getting a bit into the rhythm of the game. Nothing particularly good or spectacular, but nothing underwhelming either.

  • Lingard might be our most motivated player on the field. Looks less and less like a "youth player" and more like someone who wants to be taken seriously. Not entirely effective, but seems like he is focused on getting the job done.

  • Memphis has been very poor, slowing down attacks and always making the wrong decision. Too eager to impress and to do the spectacular. A couple of times he's beaten his marker only to slow down and sort of wait for his next marker to approach him, or he's passed the ball backwards instead of going for it. Very poor.

  • Wilson has been quite "meh". Hasn't looked capable of actually winning a personal battle, which you'd usually need to do if you want to score.

In general, we've had a lot of posession, fast circulation of the ball (definitely faster than with van Gaal's, even in his pre-seasons) and once we get close to the box we try to be direct and get a shot or a cross, instead of just circulating the ball until we lose it.

Decent stuff, getting players a bit of match rhythm and watching some youngsters. Should be interesting to see how we fare with these seven subs.
