Mega Monday - Dewgong and Walrein

Mega Dewgong

Honestly Mega Dewgong is difficult to make viable without explosive stat boosts and a good ability, because it has horrible stats, typing, and abilities. So to make Mega Dewgong worth using, prepare for some BIG boosts.

Goal

Take advantage of Dewgong's cool physical movepool like its dual STAB priority. Make it an offensively inclined mega since defensive Ice types just won't work. Try not to do too much at once.

Stats

HP: 90

Atk: 70 -> 130 (+60)

Def: 80 -> 100 (+20)

SpA: 70 -> 60 (-10)

SpD: 95 -> 110 (+15)

Spe: 70 -> 85 (+15)

The stat boosts are quite simple. Instead of trying to make it some kind of mixed attacker, I made it purely physical, because let's be honest, when your original stats are that bad, you can only choose one or the other. If you choose both you will have to settle with really weak base offensive stats, which is really hindering on megas due to lack of item. I thought taking 10 from SpA was forgiveable to slightly boost its Attack stat further, because like Beedrill, it has bad stats to begin with. The big boost to its Attack puts it on par with Garchomp at 130, which is respectable. Its 85 Speed puts it at a decent tier, letting it run Adamant and still outspeed base 70s like Breloom and Bisharp. This is quite big as it can negate their priority in Mach Punch and Sucker Punch, which would trouble its sweep. An Adamant nature on 130 Atk puts it at a max of 394, now starting to reach fairly strong levels, or forgiveable levels for a mega Pokemon. Finally, the leftovers has been put into bulk, with 90/100/110, Mega Dewgong can take hits rather well.

Ability

Technician: moves with 60BP or less power are boosted by 1.5x.

Seels Seals are smart, Technician fits. Technician is a cool ability for Mega Dewgong as it can boost both of its priority in Aqua Jet and Ice Shard to 60BP, negating the problem of its bad Speed. It also makes sure Avalanche always hits at at least 90BP, or 120 if outsped, making it a cool option. Other boosted moves are Icicle Spear, which can be really strong if you get 4 or 5 hits, and Fake Out.

New Moves

Needle Arm (Grass, physical 60BP move with 30% chance to flinch, boosted by Technician).

Swords Dance, Belly Drum.

With Needle Arm, Dewgong gains coverage for fellow Water types. Swords Dance and Belly Drum enable sweeps. A +6 Mega Dewgong for example firing off 60BP priority water and ice moves is quite scary.

Sample Set

Azumarill 2.0

Dewgong @ Dewgonite

Ability: Thick Fat -> Technician

EVs: 24 HP / 252 Atk / 232 Spe

Adamant Nature

  • Aqua Jet

  • Ice Shard

  • Needle Arm

  • Belly Drum / Swords Dance

The EVs are a simple max attack with enough speed to outspeed max speed base 70s, with the rest in bulk (could just go max speed tbh but gotta look cool). Belly Drum with its dual priority allow it pull of some cool sweeps, with Need Arm for coverage against water types like Slowbro who would otherwise wall it. Swords Dance is another option if you prefer longevity and patience.

Summary

  • Scarier than a BD Azumarill due to dual priority. Azumarill's mono priority lets it be revenged by more things, such as Latios (ironic) for example as Latios resist Jet. Dewgong however has Ice Shard to bypass more checks. It also hits quite harder with its priority:

252+ Atk Technician Dewgong Aqua Jet vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mew: 109-129 (31.9 - 37.8%) -- 91% chance to 3HKO

252+ Atk Huge Power Azumarill Aqua Jet vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mew: 81-96 (23.7 - 28.1%) -- 88.8% chance to 4HKO

Azumarill obviously however has more raw power, due to a technical base Atk of 149, but regarding priority on their BD sets, Dewgong hits harder.

  • Lacks Sitrus Berry to recover HP when it drums. This is big to balance it out. Despite having better coverage and being stronger than Azu with a BD set, it lacks Sitrus which makes it way more susceptible to faster priority.

  • Has a fair amount of checks to pick it off after BD such as Keldeo and Talonflame for offense, Unaware Quag or Clef for stall, faster water types in general like Energy Ball Manaphy, Mega Gyara etc. An important thing to note is that when Dewgong BDs, it will always be at at least 50% health. Factor in things like Stealth Rock and/or the damage you do to it while it sets up and it appears more balanced than originally thought.

  • To efficiently use Mega Dewgong, you want partners that can remove hazards, and offer Volt-Turn to get it in safely to set up.
