Millennials of Reddit, what lie were you told growing up?

The biggest "lie" told to me as a child was about drugs and narcotic abuse. I remember vividly sitting in on one of those grade wide assemblies and being lectured on how drugs will kill you. No matter how you use them, they will make you a loser the you will die...

Questions I wasn't allowed to ask and or never got a definitive answer:

Is that true? Are you a loser if you happen to experiment with drugs? Do all drugs kill you or do only certain drugs? Which drugs are worse? How many people use drugs and what kind of drugs are they using? Does drug prevalence have anything to do with socioeconomic status? Why is alcohol legal and cannabis illegal when it is a scientific fact that with excessive use, alcohol is vastly more damaging to you health?

I've buried three friends because of drugs.. Two of them good buddies of mine.. I still believe the lies we were told as a child about drugs lead my friends to their untimely death.
