Monday Musings: Community Response Thread (Week 3)

Hisao fumbled his keys, but eventually managed to pry open the door. His cramped little room was a mess, with bits of paper and plastic wrappers strewn about. It was just a bit of carnage from planning a little surprise for the light of his life. He heard the all too familiar tolling of the school bell signing that the school day was officially done, thus letting the throngs of students out into the tight hallways. Hisao wasn’t in the habit of skipping class, but today was an exception. He grabbed the delicately wrapped parcel on the table and hastily shut the door behind him. If he rushed a bit, he should be able to catch her just in time.

“Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit.” Hisao says as he rushes down the courtyard to the main building. He made his way through the herd of students to reach the third floor. Before making his way to his destination, he was stopped by the Student Council. He could feel his stomach churn instantly; he knew he will have his ear talked off for skipping class.

“Where the hell have you been, Hicchan~!” Misha’s tone being serious, well as serious as Misha can be.

“I was…um…busy,” is all he could muster up as an excuse.

“Busy with what? What is it that is important that you had to skip class for the day~?”

“I overslept, studying for exams coming up next week. I guess I went overboard last night,” as he chuckles, hoping they won’t see through his lie.

Shizune steps forward and studies Hisao, her eyes looking up and down. Her eyes narrow when their eyes meet. Hisao keeps face while Shizune begins to glare at him, trying to see if his eyes will fail him. After a couple of minutes, the stare down ends and Shizune turns to Misha and begins to sign.

“Well don’t make this a habit~! If you skip classes again, the Student Council won’t be lenient like this time around, Hicchan~!” Misha warns Hisao.

The duo begins to walk away, signing back and forth with each other. Hisao lets out a sigh of relief; his lie got him off the hook. But before Hisao can continue his way, Misha pops up from behind him.

“What’s in the box, Hicchan!” Misha asks in her booming voice.

Hisao jumps up from his spot. His heart picks up in speed. He begins to clutch his chest. Misha’s smile quickly dissipates and horror takes over her face. Shizune runs up and signs to Misha in blurring speeds. Misha grabs the boy in the shoulders, “Hicchan! Control your breathing. Breathe in slowly and breathe out slowly. Breathe in. Breathe out.”

The weak heart kid follows the pink-hair girl’s instructions, well Shizune orders. After a couple breaths, Hisao’s heart begins to return to normal pace. Hisao looks up at the Student Council and gives them a weak smile to show them that he’s okay. The both of them look at each with relief, before Shizune signs furiously to Misha. Misha’s face begins to turn pale after Shizune finishes signing to her.

“Hicchan~! I’m sooooo sorry for sneaking up on you like that. I forgot that you have a heart problem. I promise to not sneak up on you again, Hicchan!” Misha yells as tears begin to form.

“It’s okay Misha,” he says, still breathing slowly. “Just be more considerate next time.”

“Okay, but I feel bad now, Hicchan. Shizune was just curious what was in the box.”

“It’s a present for someone. I forgot today was their birthday, so I rush here to meet her to give it her.”

Shizune studies the box, her eyes narrow when she looks at the box, reading for it’s for. She shrug her shoulders before signing to Misha.

“Tell that person, the Student Council wishes them a Happy Birthday, Hicchan~!” Misha shouts, her bubbly tone returning to normal.

Hisao nods his head as the blue and pink make their way to the stairs. He continues to make his way to his class 3-3. Opening the door to the classroom, he notices that the classroom is empty besides Motou at his desk. He’s reading one of his scientific journals. He looks up and spots Hisao in the doorway and makes his best interpretation of a smile. Hisao smiles back just as awkward, and apologize to his teacher for skipping class. Mutuo shrugs his shoulder as he didn’t notice he was gone.

Leaving class 3-3 behind him, Hisao begins to wonder where she can be. He ponders for a few moments before deciding to head to the school’s garden.

Hisao walks down the path leading to the garden. The snow making crush noises as he takes each step. The snow has been falling since this morning and looks as though it won’t stop anytime soon. As he makes his way to his destination, he spots the girl he has been looking for. The silhouette begins to grow and become clear with each step. The lone girl in the garden notices Hisao, and a smile forms on her face when he meets her.

“I thought you forgot what today was,” she asks him, hugging him when he is in range.

“Why you think that? Do you think I am one to forget my girlfriend’s birthday?” Hisao questions.

A small fist hits him and his arm. The owner of the fist smiles at him as her cheeks turn a rosy color. “Shut up! You know how I feel hearing being called someone’s girlfriend. It’s weird.”

“Well you are my girlfriend right? If not, then I can give this present to someone who doesn’t mind being called my girlfriend,” Hisao teases.

“Well, what did you get me?” she questions Hisao, pointing at the small brown box.

“Well there’s only one way to find out. Happy Birthday!” Hisao cheers as he hands the present to her. “Oh, the Student Council wishes you a Happy Birthday as well.”

The girl takes the box and proceeds to open it with excitement. “The Student Council wishes me a Happy Birthday? That’s nice of them. I thought they didn’t care for other people’s life,” she jokes.

“Yeah, well I they had a change of heart recently,” he laughs.

“Oh, this is exactly what I wanted! How did you know?”

“I remember you mentioning that you wanted that a couple a months ago, so I place an ordered for it. I’ve been holding on to it for today.”

The girl wraps her arms around Hisao, burying her face into his chest. “Thank you!” she mumbles into his chest. “I’m glad I have you as my boyfriend.”

“I didn’t hear the last part, can you repeat that,” he teases.

Her arms unwrap from him and Hisao takes another punch to the arm. “I said I’m glad I have you as a boyfriend.”
