Monthly DIY Laymen questions Discussion

Oh never realized this was a thing but glad to hear about it! I've been lurking here for a while trying to soak up knowledge as I plan to build a moderate sized adu down the line. Working with an architect isn't really in the cards so I want to learn as much as I can while designing to make sure I'm mostly sticking to prescriptive practices and won't have an engineer tell me I need an insanely expensive solution when I bring a design to them. Was wondering if someone could point me to good intro sources for learning about wind/earthquake bracing or tips for basic design practices to follow to avoid making my project into an engineering nightmare (eg space windows at least every x feet if that's a thing or the like). Basically, what kind of things make you want to smash your head into a wall when you see them in the architectural drawings?
