Movies you wish you'd watched for the first time

These wouldn't be for everyone, I have kind of a weird taste in movies sometimes.

Some of my favorites that I wish I could see again for the first time:

  • Arrival - I know it's been mentioned numerous times already. I watched it for the first time at a film festival in a packed 2000-seat theater and it was incredible to experience it with an audience that big.

  • Moonlight - I've watched it a bunch of times since it came out but I don't think I'll ever forget the feeling I had watching that for the first time, realizing I was witnessing something stunning. I saw it with a full audience at the Toronto International Film Festival with just about the entire main cast there for a Q&A. I remember the crowd felt electric after it was over and there was a huge standing ovation for the actors. Amazing film that I connected with so deeply and personally.

  • Donnie Darko - another "fuck with your head" time travel movie

  • I want to say Requiem for a Dream but I'm torn on that. I saw it for the first time about 19 or 20 years ago on DVD. I rented it, watched it on a Friday or Saturday night, was completely blown away and disturbed, watched it a second time the next day before I had to return it to the rental store. I have never been able to bring myself to watch it again. So unique, so unsettling, so disturbing, definitely one of my more memorable film watches.

  • Jurassic Park - I still get a sense of wonder watching it the first time they see the dinosaurs on the island. The effects hold up so well even though the movie is almost 30 years old. I wish I could experience it again for the first time on a giant movie theater screen.

  • Scream - My friends and I were the exact right age for that movie when it came out in the 90s. I kind of wish I could experience something that genre-defining again. It freaked me out a lot when I saw it the first time and in a way was revolutionary for the teen horror genre.
