My Grandfather looking like a character out of a Dickens novel. Taken in the East End of London sometime between 1937 - 1940 before he was evacuated to the Welsh countryside. He passed away in 2015.

Grandad had a sad childhood. I don't feel comfortable sharing too many details about him but parents never evacuated with their children.

In my Grandad's life his mother left at a young age and his father stayed in London. He made money by robbing valuable and materials like copper piping from bombed houses. He wasn't a great Dad but he had his own issues growing up, including being a Barnardo's child. This is my great grandfather I mean, not my Grandad.

When my Grandad got to Wales, he was actually rejected by the first couple he was meant to go to because they didn't want to house a ginger.

At the end of his life my Grandad was a homeowner and died surrounded by people he loved. He was a great man, very bright by denied the opportunity to gain education despite qualifying for grammar school due to a decision by his Dad.

He had an interesting life and seeing how many upvotes and the kind words people have stated, I might share more of him as he grew up. He really was a working class boy done good.
