Need Advice on Starting Repair Business

I'm mostly dealing with ridiculously easy fixes, I'm sure.

One would think that.

I don't run a repair business, but I fix peoples computers all the time and have been most of my life. You would not believe how ridiculously malware-laden peoples computers can be. While much of it is easy to fix.. some is not, and requires a considerable amount of time to find a solution.

I fixed my neighbor's computer a few months ago after he answered the phone from some guy in India posing as a Microsoft employee. My neighbor let him on his computer, at which point the scammer intentionally broke his Windows installation (almost nothing was functioning.. executables didn't even work), then tried to charge him $300 to fix it. How do you debug Notepad not opening? Turned out the scammer went into msconfig and unchecked every startup service then rebooted.. literally nothing worked.

Another friend from work lets his kids use his laptop. I fix the thing.. he brings it back to me a month later with countless viruses and malware again.

These are the kinds of people you'll have to deal with. And if they bring you in with a hardware issue, and that's all you fix.. the next time they show up at your store with malware issues, and it will be your fault because it's never been the same since you "did that thing".

I would personally suggest offering a free or inexpensive basic malware scan/cleaning to every customer. Just plug in a USB stick and run a few tools.. most of it is just waiting time but will probably save you some grief in the future.

One software recommendation is Passmark's BurnInTest. It's awesome for the first go at diagnosing hardware problems. Easy and fast.. and it will catch most hardware issues. You can also print out test result reports from it to give to the customer showing a PASS/FAIL.. I don't know about you, but when something of mine is allegedly being tested, I like seeing the test results myself.
