The All-Star Break is over and gone and we played some real hockey this week! Not to pile on, but Montréal's rating has dropped for eleven weeks straight. That's just nuts.

Rating - The value R for which the sum of GP*Ra/(Ra+Rb) for all teams B equals the number of wins a team has. Here's a post I made explaining this more in depth. An “average” team has a rating of 100.
RRWP - Round Robin Winning Percentage - The expected winning percentage of a team if it played every other team once.
SoS - Strength of Schedule - The value S such that a team's winning percentage is equal to R/(R+S).
The code that makes these numbers!
Before complaining about where your team is ranked, remember first that SHOOTOUTS ARE TIES and that your team’s rating is affected by what everyone else does as well, not just your team. If your team has the same record (i.e., W%) as another team, but that team is ranked higher, they’ve played a harder schedule than you have. If you've checked all that and the rankings still don't make sense to you, I would love to try to explain as best I can. It is entirely possible that I could have screwed up somewhere.
The following only considers inter-division games:
Divsion | Rating | RRWP | SoS |
---|---|---|---|
Central | 112.44 | 0.5389 | 96.07 |
Metro | 109.52 | 0.5302 | 96.51 |
Atlantic | 93.06 | 0.4761 | 103.08 |
Pacific | 87.25 | 0.4548 | 104.86 |
If the playoffs started today (and were determined by these ratings):
Central | Pacific | Atlantic | Metro |
---|---|---|---|
CHI | LAK | TBL | WSH |
DAL | SJS | FLA | NYR |
STL | ANA | DET | NYI |
WPG | COL | PIT | NJD |
In: WPG, ANA
Out: MIN, ARI
Remember, wild card teams can play in the “wrong” division. The top division winner in a conference plays the second wild card, regardless of which division the wild card team belongs to. This occurs even when there is one wild card from each division.
