Nicole Guerriero's "Coachella" look controversy

I'm Hindu and Indian, so here's my opinion.

A lot of people argue that you should be able to borrow from other people's culture. I totally agree, you should be able to. If you want to incorporate a bindi into your everyday wardrobe, I would be more than happy to show you were to buy some.

However, wearing bindi's as a costume? Totally not okay. Wearing them just for halloween, or a concert or for cochella is clearly wearing them as a costume.

Here is why it's not okay. Growing up, minorities were usually ostracized for attempting to practice their culture. They were bullied and made fun of and ridiculed because our culture was seen as different and not part of the "norm." If you're then incorporating parts of those culture into a costume, you're communicating that same message...that the culture you're costuming is weird and different and not acceptable for normal everyday life, just for weird costume occasions.

There are people from a minority culture that say they don't mind this form of cultural appropriation. The important thing to keep in mind is were these people ever ostracized for their culture? For example, if someone's been in America for generations and are not really in touch with their ancestor's culture, or if they live in a part of America that's super accepting or if they have never even lived in America and are still in their home culture....they're not going to be offended. That's because they've never felt what it's like to be treated as if you, your family and your family's culture is strange and unacceptable.

THAT BEING SAID, I don't find her video offensive. What she used doesn't really look like a bindi if I'm being honest, it just looks like a sticker.
