No Financial Support from (well off?) Parents

Why is it so wrong for OP to own this situation and evaluate student loans v/s Community College and a job?

Why is that wrong? Why am I the bad guy for suggesting that path?

Because we're talking about a specific situation, and not in generalities about how kids make their way through college.

Like it or not, FAFSA exists as a federal program to help kids get through college. FAFSA works on the assumption that a parent who claims their child as a dependent (and gains the tax benefits that come with claiming a dependent) will provide income to that child.

FAFSA is for the kid, not for the parent. An 18 year old with no solid income or parental contributions deserves FAFSA aid because our government arbitrarily determined that their federal program FAFSA exists to aid students who cannot pay for college. OP falls into that category, so yes, she deserves the FAFSA aid at the very least.

Where the parent becomes an asshole is when they claim the 18 year old as a dependent and contribute fuck-all to them. OP's parent is literally abusing her for tax benefits and screwing OP over because FAFSA doesn't play ball with parents who take the tax credits but don't give back to the kid. Nobody is obligated to pay their kid's way through college (though if that's not the case, you should probably sit your kid down and talk finances and options), but claiming a kid as a dependent is a two-way street, the "it's my money!" argument goes directly out the window when you've told the government that you are supporting your kid for tax credits. Supporting your kid past the age of 18 includes contributing to college costs.
