Does it really matter to have friends in college?

Okay, actually my college started in between peak COVID, we knew little about each other as we were in the same major so when college finally started offline we decided to share room. It's residential college so taking hostel with shared room is compulsory. Now coming back to being about serious or rational, what does it really mean to be friends? Is it only about mutual benefits? So something more than that??? If it's only mutual benefits then i don't think they are wrong, they can surely do whatever they what and come to ask for help when they need , but is it friendship? And about them being full with their life that doesn't mean selectively excluding someone, or does it?
