‘No way to prevent this’, Says Only Development Community Where This Regularly Happens

I'm not a very political person and don't really care but the logic of this intrigues me. I suspect the reason that this is considered a red line for so many when all of those other things you mention don't phase them is that all of those other things are things you need to talk about or come to some consensus about with other people before doing anything about it. Whether or not we actually live in a police/surveillance state, whether the "war machine" as you call it is worth worrying about, and whether or not the words "oligarchy" or "corporatocracy" even apply to this country are all things that can be difficult to come to such a consensus on, to put it lightly. Someone actually coming for your stuff is a lot easier to think about. Having physical symbols of "freedom" that must be physically taken away by a government that seeks to impose political tyranny is kind of important when you can't easily come to a consensus about anything else.

Again, I'm not a very political person. Go easy on me. I'm just trying to explain this rationale in a hopefully objective way. There is logic and reason to it. Rights are universal but they are not always easy to understand. Your rights can be shaped or subverted in all kinds of different ways that you are not qualified to prepare yourself for unless you are a lawyer (by the police, by your employer, by your university, by websites you visit, and so on). It makes sense to have some symbol of power that says "You cannot take this, and I dare you to try."
