NYT: U.S. Says It Secretly Removed Malware Worldwide, Pre-empting Russian Cyberattacks

Not surprising at all, and really, inevitable.

I’m going to get flamed for saying this, but people who are “afraid” of this kind of action from the FBI need to find a better hill to die on. This won’t go away ever. There will always be privately held business that outright neglect cyber security…

People need to accept this kind of action from the FBI isn’t going away so that can we move past it, instead of hysterics that it happens period. “Warrant proof” encryption frustrates the hell out of the government. If a private company encrypts their data with their own private key, then not even the US government can get past that. I’m sure some compromise can be reached that satisfies the government and private businesses with the help of encryption.

I think that in the same way your electrical wiring, plumbing, building codes, whatever, need to meet government standards so should your cybersecurity. Like a Cyber Health Inspector should giving out ratings …lol.. At least that could potentially limit unannounced and secret patching by the FBI. That might be cost prohibitive for small to midsize business to have to meet these standards, but the government can help with that (tax breaks/incentives, subsidizing it), whatever.
