Why do pantsers get a bad rap?

I always hated the word "pantser"... I prefer "gardener". I snip here and there and I have a general vision of what I want my garden to become, but the plants do pretty much what they want unless I decide they need a little guidance.

"Pantser" does have a negative connotation because it just sounds like we're unwilling to do the work, while in truth we have a more organic process that allows us to write the greater truth of our characters. It's not laziness as much as an artistic process that can't be squeezed into an outline or an Excel spreadsheet.

That being said, as a pantser, I probably end up doing twice as much planning and outlining as I'd like, because there IS a vision to this whole mess, but I can't just press a button for the rhododendrons to bloom.
