Post Hateful Eight 70mm show reports here

SPOILER FREE POST

Saw it on 12.24 and everything went perfectly (in regards to the projector.)

The booklet is much better than any of us were expecting, and everyone in the theater seemed to love looking through it. It's a great touch to the experience.

The soundtrack, especially Morriccone's, was perfect. I loved the overture and the title song (that organ...) The film looked beautiful of course, and some of the conversations were perfect in 70mm. The dialogue between Jackson and Dern by the fireplace was so wide that I can't imagine it having the same impact on a lesser resolution. The depth of emotion on their faces, the cold distance combined with the flickering of the fire (and hopes) was awesome. Needless to say, nearly every scene in the snow was perfectly captured on film. The snowflakes in the blizzard were glorious, and I'll likely catch it again in 70mm just for these scenes alone.

I didn't notice anything wrong with either the sound, focus, or anything else. It started on time, sounded great, and looked fantastic. As for the movie, I won't go into it deeply out of fear for spoiling something, but I loved it. It's unmistakably Tarantino, but it's also a step backwards, forwards, and a little bit sideways. It's strange, even by his standards, and the overall energy and tone is different than what we've come to expect. But if you're excited at the prospect of a "new film by QT," then you'll be giddy at the first note of the overture. After sleeping on it and talking about it with my group, I appreciate the film a lot more. There's a lot of subtext, and some very interesting themes boiling under the surface. It'll be interesting to watch again in a year or so to see how it stands on its own, but I'd definitely rank it near the top of my QT favorites (Basterds and Pulp being at the top.) Until then, I'll catch it one more time in 70mm for the depth, warmth, and overall joy of the experience. And make no mistake: this film is an experience, and it's fucking great.
