Prices aren't what's killing theaters for me, it's the audiences.

I also dislike going to the movies for similar reasons. Whether it be people talking, kicking the seats, sitting the middle of the row yet getting up and squeezing by everyone like 6 times throughout the movie, there's always something/someone to make the experience less than decent.

Over the last few years, one of the theater chains here has opened a VIP type cinema, where there is a 19+ age restriction. The seats are huge and comfy, with little tables for every seat to put your popcorn/drinks/etc on. You can also order off their menu straight from your seat and have the food/beverage brought to you by staff (this includes alcohol, fries and lots more).

Granted, the price is a bit steeper than the normal movie ticket price, but considering there's no kids and people seem to be more respectful there, it's usually a very pleasant experience if you choose a time/day that is not very popular.

While I don't go to the movies often in general, if I do, you can bet your butt I'm going VIP during non-peak hours to avoid having to deal with people with no self-awareness.
