Resume Roast and Progress Check Request – A Nontarget Sophomore Interested in Financial Advisory and ESG Service Line Having Trouble Getting Interviews

My three main questions:

  1. What should I do to position myself better to be offered a return offer in the service line (Financial Advisory and ESG Service Line) I am interested in at the current mid-tier firm I will be interning at? Like should I reach out to my university recruiter and ask if I can be connected to professionals who worked in that service line to start building relationship with them before starting as an intern when I return in the Spring Semester as a starting idea?
  2. You may already notice this, but I listed some points under my Research Scholar position that I haven’t worked at yet, and I wonder if it’s ok to do so even though I haven’t started as those points I did unofficially for my Research Scholar's project before I got the funding and the paperwork to make it official and it was not related to my Research Assistant Work at all?
  3. How does Big 4 look on the fellowship as it’s in a different field and unusual for applicants I am assuming, and how do I leverage my experience for the recruiting and interview process? Also is it considered as experience or activity, as in the liberal arts field, it is considered as experience, but I’m not sure for accounting/finance field?
  • For context, the fellowship aims to develop future leaders in public policy and advocacy and is selective, like most of the incoming fellows came from ivy league or public ivy schools, and the interview process is quite challenging, such as doing a timed writing assessment and expert panel interview. The fellows are expected to write op-eds to be published in national newspapers or write briefings for think thanks and lobbying firms that will be distributed to Capitol Hill members, lobby/advised Congressional representatives and their staff member on economic development and anti-poverty legislations, and help organize grassroots and mass advocacy events. It is quite successful, like getting several bills passed and securing good chunk of funding for several public initiatives. From doing a quick LinkedIn search, a lot of the alumni's careers accelerated after leaving the program in both the public and private sector.
