A lot of modern architecture, especially the "here's a box" type, are actually not functional at all. If you thought they were the face of progress, you fell for the facade. They deliberately eschew functional aspects of the past, in order to reject "tradition". "Uggghhh, these houses by the bay with the big awnings are symbols of the bourgeoise"....uh, no dude. Awnings keep direct sunlight out of the window when the sun angle is high in summer, while allowing it to enter in winter. Getting rid of them to emphasize your boxy, featureless aesthetic (and kicking up the air conditioning to compensate) is literally just burning fossil fuel for this empty "I reject the past" aesthetic. That, my friend, is fucking vanity.
