S15E15 - “Reunited” [Post-Episode Discussion]

Don't get me wrong, I truly support this movement and everything it stands for. The problem I had with the activist portion of "Reunited" was that they made it seem like the opposition to trans and drag is from having power and privilege eroded. Meanwhile, it's 100% about children and whether or not they should be exposed to adult entertainers. It seems like misrepresenting the opposition weakens our fight against them because we will be fighting against the wrong thing. If certain members of the trans/queer community weren't getting caught in questionable positions with children, I think nobody would care as much as they do now about trans people and drag queens living their lives. Instead, people like Rupaul are pushing this "anti-oppression" piece which, instead of addressing the child aspect, makes it look like the trans and drag community is entitled to children, which is max creepy and BAD optics.

It would have been much more productive if Rupaul addressed the child aspect, but he didn't do that because these days he's not a real activist and he doesn't want to face backlash. He'd have to face the fact that Violet Chachki, one of his queens, was caught posing naked in a photo with a 10 year old in her dressing room. Characterizing the opposition as blind haters really weakens our ability to have a constructive dialogue about what's been happening.

I think if Rupaul and the drag community did more PR to say that children should only be exposed to G rated drag, and do a PSA telling some drag queens to check themselves and what they're doing before they interact with children, it would go a looooong way to quelling the backlash. Instead Rupaul chose the easy way out by making it about "oppression", while he hides in his billion dollar acreage where he doesn't have to worry about what every-day people are going through in Tennessee.
