Science AMA Series: I’m Dr. Izumi Tabata, a professor at Ritsumeikan University Graduate School of Sport and Health Science, and known for the Tabata Training Protocol for High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). AMA!

Hi Dr. Izumi Tabata, hope i'm not too late to get my questions answered :).

During your study of HIIT, did the participants padle on the bike as in active rest between bouts? I myself is working on my master thesis now where i am comparing the protocol of yours against an aerobic interval training, however, i have done this on the treadmill which led the participants of the "tabata protocol" standing static between bouts.

And if ur participant's rest period was active, do you think this could significantly increase the number of bouts the participants could complete as it would increase the dissipation of lactic from the muscle?

What was the reason for using 85RPM as a sign for stopping the training?
