She's not wrong, and saintcharlesborromeo is a fuckwit.

he posted criticism of this photo, but... he has a point.

his words: Sup my name is CJ I'm an ASME & AWS nationally certified code welder, FSU alumni, TWS alumni, I come from a boilermaker family ( Local 592). I'm half chinese and half german (Yes I have a reason for mentioning this) I've ran jobs from Tulsa OK, to Southern California. My dad was a superintendent for the union (this is relation to women on the job) I'll get back to the background in a minute, the reason why I'm making this post is because this picture was on the front page and of course there's a huge discussion in the comments (well we only have limited characters to reply) I check the "bad" comments and of course everyone has been downvoted into oblivion that rejected this picture. What really got me was the fact A LOT of people who pointed out flaws in that picture were crucified. So let's take a more detailed look at this picture.

1) No welding cap (She has a bandanna on, lol please...) enjoy being scalped by the hot "BBs" or arc sparks that are produced by your welding machine (Stick welding and FCAW is the worse, but there are rarely any sparks with TIG welding I weld in just a long sleeve shirt and a hood) "BUT OMG YOU JUST SAID SHE CAN'T WELD WITHOUT A WELDING CAP OR HER HAIR IS GG OMFG U LIE!!! xD!!!! >:C" She's not TIG welding. Explanation in number 4.

2) Low cut shirt? Baobei please, enjoy getting melanoma from all the UV exposure you're about to receive from the welding arcs (YA WELDING IS SUPER FUCKING BRIGHT unless you're running subarc)

3) Make up? Awww who are you looking qt3.14 for? The only makeup you wear is the soot and dirt from the job.

4) Those are brand spanking new heavy duty lincoln gloves she either got from her Tulsa Welding School starter package or 12 bucks at AirGas. You use those gloves for stick welding, MIG/FCAW welding. TIG/MIG (Specialist welding) we use our sleek super cool deer/pig/cow/lamb skin white gloves. mmmmmm silky smooth, and they fit.... http://i.imgur.com/KTqZ3FO.gif

5) Cotton thin long sleeve? LOLOLOLOL, I mean that's cool. I don't mind the smell of burnt human in the morning. (that's a highly flammable fabric) You wear a heavy denim work shirt, so you know you have a less chance of catching fire.

If she showed up to my shop or a job I was running, I'd tell her thank you but I would not be requiring any of her services. Not because she's a woman, because she's ill prepared. That's like showing up to a hockey game expecting to play without skates.

Now I noticed the majority of the comments were men and women talking about inequality in THIS (welding) field. Let me explain to you the environment if you choose this career path (This is educational for aspiring welders)

This is a fucking hard and dangerous field to be in. "Omg how hard can it be xD?!?!?" Good question fictional imgurite (imgurian?). Your hours normally range from a normal 8 hours a day (40 a week at least) to anywhere from 10,12,16. It depends on the job but sometimes you're working 7 days a week ( Harsco in Tulsa has been working a mandatory 60 hours a week for the past 4 years) But that overtime is hella killer. (Yes I used hella)

Besides the long hours it's fucking dangerous. I've seen guys lose hands, fingers (My dad was slammed in the back with a load of pipe (10k lbs) back in '92) He's been handicapped for 2 decades nows) And most of the accidents are caused by user error (My dad's accident was caused because some cowboy couldn't run a crane right) You're in a confined spot with a lot of dangerous equipment let's say Miss I'mnotastripperbutawelder caught fire and she freaks out and starts running around like a headless chicken, a lot of the guys at work have their hoods on cannot see anything but their work piece, she slams into an acetylene tank and knocks it over and the valve head pops off, you have yourself a homemade missile with about 2500 PSI flying through the shop and it's headed directly to some unfortunate person just doing his/her job who can't see a flying tank or woman on fire because they have no visibility. Anyways besides that completely hypothetical scenario, shit falls, you get caught in machinery, and you will 100% without a fucking doubt, I swear to Buddha that you will get burned.

Now the people you're going to work with, they're some of the roughest and rowdiest people you'll ever meet. They're called roughnecks for a reason. Most of the people in this field had nowhere else to go. It was either this or jail ( a lot of the excuses for welders) Hell a lot of prisons teach welding LOL. But yea you're being thrown into a group of rowdy motherfuckers, that have no filter, short tempers and very colorful humor. I myself have 2 out of those 3... actually no, I have 3/3. You have to have thick skin to make a living in this profession. I walk into my shop every single night and I'm greeted (oddly enough by a half black guy) "Sup Chink!" With a random stereotypical statement or something about my Asian features ("HUE HUE YOU GONNA USE YOUR HOOD OR DO YOUR SLANT EYES FILTER OUT THE BRIGHT RIGHT (he talks in an Asian accent when he speaks to me) And of course I respond back with an equally offensive remark. And thing about it is, we're close friends! Besides our friendship this is normally how "Shop talk" is. I do not discriminate against; Sex, Gender, sexual preference, religion, etc. But I cannot help you, if you're overly sensitive about someone yelling "Hey you cunt" or someone making a colorful joke. If you have thin skin, you have no seat at the roughneck table. A lot of welders do not like working for women for this very reason though. They don't (usually) want to offend a woman because 1) HR 2) that's someone's wife/daughter/sister (no matter how ugly she is :3) 3) A lot of the older fellas are old fashion But that does not stop them from joking about it on the side and if they get reported, they will be pissed. (Why change something that's always been "a way" for the past 100 years?)

Violence: Like I said, people in this field are short tempered and roughnecked. I myself have gotten into a few scraps in my career. Over stupid shit too. I will never talk to anyone in a malicious manner (and If I offend you and you bring it to my attention I will apologize on the spot) But if you can't take a joke, do not open up with one. Example: I wear my jeans tucked into my red wing pull on boots, some grinder was like "Are you a cattle fucker BOY?" Of course I start laughing because I thought he was joking ( He didn't realize I was the graveyard lead welder at the time and he had his white friend next to him) But he was just trying to fuck with me because he thought I was a new kid ( There are A LOT of bullies in this field) I replied "Only cattle I'm fucking is your old lady (wife)." He got hella pissed and tried to fire up on me with a punch (fast forward) fight broke out and was broke up. Nobody was fired (he later quit a week or so later)

What I'm trying to convey with that story is, this is how the welding field is, and will remain. As for all of those "welders" in the last thread that were posting "OMG AS A WELDER, WE NEED MORE WEMENZ IN DA FELD, I WELCUM U!!! xD!!!" Yea bro you're not a real welder, a real welder would of noticed everything I pointed out in that picture and called her out on it (regardless if the picture is years old)

Oh and for the racism, every job i've been on there's always one person asking for my "asian" name. And I always reply "It's Senpai" True story.

Sorry for the long post but I had no other way of explaining myself. But my welding hood and catsnake for rewards? (I guess if the pics post with this picture)

Edit: Wow my bad for the Pi typo (It's 5am I got off work like an hour ago (Yes I showered) I need caffeine! >:c)

Edit: Tl;dr People were very biased in original post, this is a detailed explanation on why the girl in the picture isn't a real welder and how the field is rough, and how jet fuel doesn't melt steel beams.
