Should I or Shouldn't I Buy... - March 07, 2015

I'm trying to get some items together for a warm weather vacation, and I am considering a few purchases on which I'd like some input. I would like to keep my spending budget on clothing purchases for my upcoming vacation to under $300, including some items not on this list, so I am trying to be discerning.

Bennett Dress at Aritzia

I'd love something flowy, casual, and flattering that I can just throw on and go and look easy-breezy put-together. This dress really caught my eye for that reason. I imagine myself stepping out onto the hotel balcony in this dress with a newspaper and a mug of tea right into a sunglasses ad. I love the pattern, particularly the uneven vertical stripes. It's simple but interesting. If I knew that I could buy this and it would look the way I imagine it in my head, I would do it in a heartbeat. However, I've found Aritzia's returns to be a little difficult on my dreams, and the waist looks like it falls low on the dress (I have a slim waist and then some business in the hips so prefer it to hit at my natural waist). I also hesitate to sweat all over something that is dry clean only because I will sweat. I get the feeling this might be a disappointment, so tell me if you think I'm wrong on that count.

tl;dr This might not be as flattering and convenient as I'm hoping. Can anyone suggest alternatives?

Express Tulip Hem Shorts

I have an ongoing battle with shorts. I WANT to wear shorts, but shorts don't want to be worn by me. I bought these print shorts from Banana Republic, and it's the closest I've ever come to putting 'shorts' and 'love' into the same sentence. I was hoping to supplement these magic shorts with some denim shorts after pinning them repeatedly in a bunch of casual looks; I bought a couple pairs thinking I'd just get them tailored wherever they didn't quite fit, but there was no saving the white ones, and I'm still kind of sitting on the regular denim pair because, well, they're practical for walking around (and I can pretty much just toss them on with a tee). The Express shorts could instead function as a supplementary or replacement to my jean-shorts effort and would pretty much match everything I'm already planning to bring. Jury's out on the pom-poms. What's up with that? I love the tulip hem though. I'm also not sure of the length. I have a hard time flattering my thighs. Most of my normal wardrobe does double duty as work and fun clothing, so I don't usually have an excuse to buy 2" pom pom shorts and now that the moment is here, I don't know if I should just go for it.

tl;dr How do I shorts
