Small and Big "holocaust"

Your reading is a biased one. For the love of rationality, SikhiWiki's only source is: Santokh Singh Jagdev "Bed Time Stories."

I have a bedtime story for you: religious communities like to make things up in order to consolidate community and conduct. A very easy example: pick up your copy of "Sundri" by Bhai Vir Singh and notice how in a work of historical fiction, he blurs the lines between fiction and fact. Then contextualize the activities of the Singh Sabha with the general anxieties that the reformist movements in early 20th century Punjab had around gender roles, and all of a sudden your Hemkunt Foundation competition doesn't seem so cool.

Check out this excerpt from "Sikh-History":

Mir Mannu became the new governor of Lahore and Multan on the 9th April 1748 A.D. He appointed Kaura Mal as his new Diwan. After setting right the administration of his province, he deployed army patrol to finish the Sikhs of his province. The Sikhs left his territory and moved to other states. Sardar Jassa singh Ramgarhia and his squad joined the army of the Commander of Jalandhar, named Adina Beg. Adina Beg was a cunning treacherous soft and sweet speaking mean person. Adina Beg on one hand would woo Sikhs to join him against Mughals on the other hand he had secret links with Afghanis, while he drew his salary from Mughals. Jassa Singh Ramgarhia, being a simple minded person trusted Adina Beg and joined his army."

So they mean to say that a Misaldar and "great Sikh warrior" (http://www.sikh-history.com/sikhhist/warriors/ahluwalia.html) was also a dupe? Inconsistencies abound.

Even the Wikipedia article is selective in its sources. JS Grewal has a lot more to say about the Ghalughare than the citation he is credited with. Similarly, you would do better than to just skim Dhavan's work from what you can see on Google Books.

Despite my abrasive approach, I am sympathetic; this reminds me of when as a ten year old I went on the Tribune's website and saw Sikh people committing crimes against one another and I couldn't believe it to be possible given the moral life of Sikhs and the hagiographies I had consumed in Sikh camps in the US till then.

For those of you following along at home: starting in 2025 I'm going to go to Sikh events wearing a t-shirt that says "1322ghagiography." Look out for it.
