Taken from r/KingstonOntario and thought it would be of interest here. Two Kingston residents accused of Indigenous identity fraud after qualifying for scholarships intended for Indigenous postsecondary students

What it means to “qualify” for an indigenous scholarship is that you have an indigenous heritage (with 4 generations before you). The reason why institutions such as the one above, is for financial support of the person applying BECAUSE of the discrimination against indigenous members. Specifically, many people in said homes would most likely been raised by these negative affects of discrimination. But if a person has been simply adopted by people of indigenous descent, that doesn’t necessarily mean they qualify for it because the heritage component isn’t as heavily applied to the affected individual that is applying for the scholarship.

In brief, the scholarship is intended for supporting indigenous members that (usually) have a strong psychological tie and heritage with those that suffered from the discrimination
