Why can't you value guns because you value human life? One of my favorite gun rights organization is the JFPO (Jews for the Preservation of Firearm Ownership). Kind of a persecuted minority if you're not too familiar with history. I don't know where you're coming from, but this is a selection of why I want to preserve gun rights.
Myth: Guns are not a good deterrent to crime
Fact: Felons report that they avoid entering houses where people are at home because they fear being shot.106
Fact: 59% of the burglaries in Britain, which has tough gun control laws, are “hot burglaries”107 which are burglaries committed while the home is occupied by the owner/renter. By contrast, the U.S., with more lenient gun control laws, has a “hot burglary” rate of only 13%.108
Fact: Washington DC has essentially banned gun ownership since 1976109 and has a murder rate of 56.9 per 100,000. Across the river in Arlington, Virginia, gun ownership is less restricted. There, the murder rate is just 1.6 per 100,000, less than three percent of the Washington, DC rate.110
Fact: A survey of felons revealed the following:113
• 74% of felons agreed that, “one reason burglars avoid houses when people are at home is that they fear being shot during the crime.”
• 57% of felons polled agreed, “criminals are more worried about meeting an armed victim than they are about running into the police.”
Myth: Private guns are used to commit violent crimes
Fact: 90% of all violent crimes in the U.S. do not involve firearms of any type.114
Fact: Even in crimes where the offender possessed a gun during the commission of the crime, 83% did not use or threaten to use the gun.115
Fact: Fewer than 1% of firearms will ever be used in the commission of a crime.116
Fact: Two-thirds of the people who die each year from gunfire are criminals being shot by other criminals.117
Fact: 92% of gang murders are committed with guns.118 Gangs are responsible for between 48% and 90% of all violent crimes.119
Fact: Most gun crimes are gang related, and as such are big-city issues. In fact, if mayors in larger cities were more diligent about controlling gang warfare, state and nationwide gun violence rates would fall dramatically.
The government cannot keep us safe and in some cases will refuse to do so. The police are not required to protect you, not mentioning how the national average response time is 11 minutes if they do. Very few people in the halls of power actually give a fuck about the LGBTQ+ community. Both viable people currently running for office have no real vested interest. Hillary came out in support for gay marriage in 2013 (are you fucking kidding me) and Trump will put supreme court judges on the bench which will reverse gay marriage. This is political tokenism where a snake oil security blanket is being sold to advance the power interests of a political party that moves our interests forward at a snails pace, only when useful. I am not one to disavow violent political action. It's not all illegitimate. You can still be fired for being gay, and if you want to take revenge on the company which persecuted you... well I can tell you it's "morally" wrong, but I can't say with a straight face that the blood sacrificed will not in the end yield a greater good or that you were completely unjustified by avenging yourself against a society that persecutes you. Violence is not inherently morally bad. Guns are not inherently morally bad. Society's non-violence fetishism when it comes to political action is itself a regressive force. We are not sheep for a higher power (state, theocratic, or both) to be poked, prodded, or slaughtered at the hands of. We are western people with western values of freedom, righteousness and virtue. I want the right which could empower me to ride up to a forced conversion therapy camp and violently liberate it like the morally deficit Auschwitz it is. I want the only piece of technology that will give me a fighting chance between me and a truck load full of drunk, bigots. How else am I to strike fear into those which have numbers, fanaticism, and more often than not institutional power. We just have to be de-fanged and Ghandi our way to equality? Be beat and intimidated and eventually society will be just? Just struggle in an eternal tug-of-war over state power and just hope our side inches us along when convenient?
