Is there anything stopping an Ontario Landlord from just raising rent (in a unit built after 2018) to an absurd amount?

People unable to have families because larger units are completely unaffordable

In the new system people would still be unable to have families because the larger units have waiting lists for years.

But everything you're describing is still better than the mess we are facing now.

I just disagree, I guess we'd need to actually compare real world examples. Do you at least agree that Ontario's implementation of rent control did nothing to stop the problem and actually made it worse? All the people in this thread saying repealing it in 2018 caused the housing crisis don't even understand what the policy was.

I personally know people who kept their apartment empty for months during times they would have preferred to just move, just because they wanted to keep their rent control.

I used to be a staunch opponent of it.

I understand your points and am open to changing my mind, but am I'm going to believe the consensus of economists unless someone shows me some strong data or examples of rent control working.
