Torn ACL, MCL and Meniscus damage to my knee

Sorry to hear about your injury. A little over a month ago I had the same triad of damage plus a hairline fracture of the tibia that healed by being on crutches for 4 weeks.

I just had my surgery a week ago for a hamstring graft and partial meniscal repair and meniscectomy. It's not so bad and I have heard of so many people going back to being completely normal again after activity. I have also heard of some who successfully go without ACLs, but it depends on what sort of activities you want to return to. I'm a runner and was told I could go without one (but still needed surgery for the meniscus anyway), but I also want to trail run which involves unstable terrain and some cutting action and lateral movement. My knee would give out for sure and do more damage inside my knee.

The rehab is the most important aspect of recovery, and will probably take about 4-6 months, plus an additional 3-6 months of careful return to any cutting activity and continuous rehab to keep the supporting structures strong and functional. It takes about 1-2 years for your new ACL to be as strong and revitalizing as the original.

I check /r/ACL frequently and it's helped answer a ton of my questions. The knee guru site has some good forums too.

Good luck!
