Transfer Questions for Nontraditional Students

Hi,

I was accepted as a CS transfer from UWM for Fall 2017 with a cum 3.5 GPA.

I have no ACT/SAT scores. How important are they for a transfer student? if at all(The site makes it feel like they are, even for much older students).

I don't think they matter as much once you have a few years of college under your belt. Mine were good, but certainly not the best.

How competitive is Madison's Computer Science program? My GPA in CS is around 3.5.

I'm a current CS Major and was accepted with 3.5 GPA, and even failed a few courses in the past. I am entering as a junior, however. I had a rough first year in college, and got a perfect 4.0 taking on 6 courses at a time since. This makes me believe grade trends matter- a lot.

How important are extracurricular activities for a transfer student? volunteering, clubs, social community involvement etc.

I had a few, but nothing stunning, that's for sure.

I really don't want to take useless classes to boost and some of my hardest/exciting classes are coming up in the next couple semesters.

A good or improving GPA is important. I actually applied twice. Once for the spring of 2016, and tried again for the Fall of 2017- to which I was accepted. I strongly believe this is because I got a 4.0 taking on a really big course load that was math and science heavy. GPA matters. Some of my classes were pretty easy gpa-boosters.

At UWM, TAs teach a good portion of our classes. A letter of recommendation from a TA should be okay, right? From my experience, 50% of classes are taught by TAs.

I know this struggle. I used two letters of rec. One from a TA, and one from a professor.

UW-Madison requires 3 semesters of a foreign language? This is required before admission?

I don't believe so.

I see that UW offers a BA and a BS in Computer Science, is there a difference?

B.S. is more specified. B.A. is far more general.
