Some people want to believe the authority they respect is worthy of it, they can't emotionally handle otherwise. Same with diehard Trumpers.

I remember at first, the scientists were like "masks don't work", a few months later they go "oh wait, we just didn't want you to hoard before hospitals do". Cali people accepted both without a peep, "oh they lied for our own good".

I wore masks through the whole mandate, but clearly some ppl took that mask a little religiously. They wear it alone in the car, changed their profile picture to have mask, and even on fucking zoom even.

Hypocrisy has always been ok if it's from the leaders you like.
