Trashtalking and competitive multiplayer communities - where do we draw the line?

Up front, I'm old.

Backstory, I was bullied.

So when Halo 2 came around, it was really my first online multiplayer experience. And it sickened me; nausea and anxiety. I wanted desperately to chat with the other players and coordinate gameplay, but those same interactions ruined the entire game.

Nowadays I play single-player offline, and while it's lonely, I feel comfortable there.

I should add that one of my favourite gaming experiences I've ever had has been through PS3's "Journey". That game was not only one of the best video game interactions I've been privy to play, but it showed me that if multiplayer were done right, then it could be harnessed as a force for good in this dark world.
