/u/CivilBrocedure gives a history of the acceptability of tattooing, explaining why Britain stands as the world's most tattooed nation, and how the fact that almost 50% of American millenials have a tattoo shows that "tattoos are one of the few evidences of a true generation gap"

I feel like the Baby Boomers got named and generalized, and ever since then Baby Boomers have tried to name and generalize everybody else but it doesn't work as well. Baby Boomers actually have dominated society over their years, so recognizing that makes sense. But the other ones (Gen X, Y, Millenials) never really make much sense.

Just look at this...

When was "America" some idealistic, Leave it to Beaver world? The bad guys were the bad guys, baseball was the best it ever has been, the peak of simple heroes like Superman and the Lone Ranger. It was the mid 50's to early 60's, right when Baby Boomers were little kids and pre-teens.

Along come the Beatles and a tiny bit of rebellion. Drugs and Sex start breaking through a little bit. Baby Boomers are teenagers.

Late 60s we have full blown rebellion, harder drugs, more sex and violence in movies, free love, society sucks, etc. Baby Boomers in college.

I don't know what to say about the 70s other than a lot of fashion choices deliberately trying to identify oneself as different from previous generations, which led to some outrageous style.

The 80s bring a lot more concern about money and family values etc. The Baby Boomers have little kids.

From here on out, the Baby Boomers try to relate everything to their kids, but it's still really all about them. Gen X was billed as this generation of kids who live at home after college and don't get a job. Is that really saying something about Gen X or is something about their complaining parents?

These days suddenly health care has become the major issue. When one looks at "today's" generation, how are they characterized? They are people that are completely different because of technology. That's again a Baby Boomer perspective. It's not just a comment about Millennials, it's a comment about who the commentator is. They have dominated the perspective for 60 years now.
