One factor that is easy to overlook is server response time which varies depending on hosting provider and internet connection speed of your device.

As for competitors who have a higher score, it could be that their page has been optimized for performance from a variety of parameters like cleaning up the code, using a content delivery network, delaying loading of images etc. Yes all of these will contribute to fast load times but the algorithms for page speed and yslow will check to see if all the boxes are ticked for a website to get a better score as well.

I believe for page speed it is best practice to use web.dev to analyze website performance now. You will see big variances here so start chipping away at the recommendations now. Use this in conjunction with GT Metrix to really stay ahead of the competition.
