What are your guys' thoughts on the Netflix MCU shows?

I used to think it was the best part of the MCU, but in a post Luke Cage season 1 world it became the worst part really quickly. Iron Fist was terrible, The Defenders started strong, and then crashed hard in the second half, The Punisher had potential but meandered like crazy and lacked thematic teeth to really do something. Jessica Jones season 2 was terrible and really let me down. Tried to watch Luke Cage season two but the first episodes featured "old man talking to the youth about the internet and how much it sucks" and I was out, fast.

I think this part of the universe has two problems - One is lack of good season long pacing that's described in this opinion piece by Film Crit Hulk. Basically he argues that a lot of the shows in the binge era are trying to be 13 hour long movies and just don't commit to following through with choices the characters can make just to hit an episode count, when instead they could use the episode count to tell smaller stories within the grander narrative, or even one-offs. I agree with that.

Second issue is that, like the MCU films, they force the same visual direction on these shows - Same cinematography, sound design, lighting, colouring, etc. The style works for Daredevil, but something like Iron Fist? The best parts of that show were when it got really goofy. It shouldn't have been grimdark.
