What are your thoughts on 'cultural appropriation' ?

I notice this when people have expressed issue with wearing qipaos or kimonos. In China and Japan respectively, these outfits are simply outfits and do not hold any special significance that bars foreigners from wearing them.

I'm British Chinese and I always say this to westerners (and people often don't believe me ironically lol). Qipao is even seen as being western-influenced as opposed to very Asian hanfu from previous times. It definitely doesn't have anything special.

I even had to look up how to say cultural appropriation (文化挪用 cultural "embezzlement" or 文化剽窃 cultural "plagiarising" apparently) because it's just not a concept. Plenty of Chinese people have some kind of weird "Christmas" celebration without properly understanding the significance behind it at all - I would argue so do many Westerners - or borrow Valentine's Day traditions or Hallowe'en or whatever it may be. If I see westerners wearing qipao and eating Chinese food on Spring Festival/New Year for fun, I could not be less offended by it.
