What could people do for FOSS or what bothers me...

Friend, I think your utilitarian views got the better of you. But please, bear with me -- your motivation is somewhat sound -- everyone would benefit from better software and we'd all like bug free feature rich products, especially if they're FOSS so we can continue to tinker and enjoy our freedoms with respect to using it.

However, you have got to understand the human condition and the way world turns and everything it entails with regard to software development.

I have learned that people are in fact very different and no two of us are alike. This, in my opinion, is the primary reason why so far we haven't had the pleasure to enjoy One Single Best Video Editor, or Browser, or Music Player, or Compiler. That's because our minds work differently, and even thought it most often on a bright day looks like we all could agree on something, there is much to divide us. That's why we have 5000 video editors (nod to a comment here that I read) -- everyone has a different idea what is a good video editor.

The challenge is to distill the common stuff into something that can become a fundament for a video editor, and work from there. But then another factor comes in -- the kind of people who develop FOSS produce, are usually those who are primarily motivated with learning by doing but also do it for themselves. Appealing to their utilitarian selves only goes so far. We are concerned with greater good, but it does not seem to sting deep enough so that we choose e.g. to fork and continue someone elses video editor -- we just turn the slate clean and start over.

Ignoring the human condition is a futile exercise, but I think things are slowly changing for the better. If you don't expect all your goals to be met tomorrow, you will eventually find the peace you're looking for. In other words, theoretically a perfect FOSS video editor for everyone is possible, but there still be forks, variants, versions, customization etc -- we don't need 5000 distinct source code bases, but one won't ever do either.
