I'm about to graduate from the GD program at UIC, and after seeing the comments about UIUC'S program I feel like we have the exact opposite issue. The professors are talented and for the most part helpful yes, but the faculty and program are highly curated and biased towards one type of design (Swiss). I feel like one specific set of design principles were drilled into us and ultimately we're all taught to have the same style coming out of a very long four years. I actually do feel jealous when I see projects from UIUC and other school's GD programs and see all the variety and creativity in projects, while ours are just different forms of the same thing.
