What does being a home room teacher entail?

A LOT more than I expected before originally starting. Since a homeroom teacher at an elementary school in America is a way more relaxed job.

The home room teachers here show up at sometimes as early as 7 and often don't leave till 6 or 7, and during many weeks later. On busy weeks some leave at 10. First off they are a part of almost every lesson if not teaching it themselves. There is no PE teacher so they teach their own classes PE. They usually show up for music and all that too. They also must Eat in their room with the kids, and they even almost always must watch their class outside in recess. It's expected. This gives them very little time to do some of their preparation work during the work day itself.

They also have all these special event times like the sports day, music festival, and basketball/soccer taikai. They are not basketball coaches but they will spend time coaching their class in this sport for for a month or more. The preparation for the sports day and music festival is also for months and all classes participate, so all home room teachers. They often almost spend an extensive time talking to their students parents on the phone in the employee office. I've seen conversations last an hour.

This couple with many other things I don't even understand in the form of taking student information and making spread sheets to compile data for their principals and the education board workers. It goes over my head.

They also have home economics class in elementary school here, that entails the teachers researching and testing and experimenting with what lessons they're teaching regarding certain dishes to be cooked or crafts to be made. They are literally always running around. I mean running like a kid is told not to do in the halls.

It has been a trip to observe working at a couple elementary schools !
