GDP alone doesn’t mean much. Significant portion of Texas GDP (something like 15%) comes from the federal government. Texas also is a net-taker of federal funds, while New York is a net giver. So despite having a lower GDP, New York is not a welfare queen state like Texas. New Yorkers (and nearly every state in the mid and North Atlantic, as well as the west coast) pay for Texas to survive. Texas may have a large GDP, but if they’re stupid enough to secede (they’re not, you’re just stupid enough to believe the pandering) they’ll quickly be in the red.
