What was the hardest encounter that happened to you?

Final Boss Fight of a Palladium Campaign that lasted roughly 6-8 months in real time ( we played once a week, on a Sunday, eight hours each session ). I was GM'ing for a table of 10-12 people, all levels 6-7 that reached about 9-10 near the end of the campaign. This was also my first time as a GM.

The quest was to find all the parts of the fallen Egyptian God of Light, Osiris, and bring him back to life to defeat the encroaching evil of the Gods of Darkness, and Osiris' brothers, Anubis and Set.

Set and Anubis surreptitiously crafted a scheme to temporarily unite and amass an army of Orcs and Wolfen, on two different continents, to start a war with the civilized humans of both the Eastern Kingdoms and the Western Badlands. This drew troops away from the Kingdom of Edo (where the quest started, and home to millions of occupants). The players were on a time crunch during their scavenger hunt for the body parts of Osiris.

The last fight was in the Western Badlands, in the Kingdom of Edo, within the main castle. The player characters walked in to Set sitting on the King's Throne, and Anubis standing beside his brother, wading through blood ankle-deep. The King of Edo, Itomas, was a Dragon Ancient, slain, and hung up by spears on the ceiling of the throne room. The player characters discovered Itomas was here to protect the world from an Old One who was sealed beneath the castle, and Set was here to release it, to aid in the conquering of the planet. Meanwhile, many ghostly figures lined the walls of the throne room (it was every King that had reigned and passed away before Itomas took the throne), and they began to play in an overture as I had my player characters roll initiative (que orchestrated music via Youtube).

Here were the contenders for the last fight:

  • Osiris and his wife, Lady Isis of the Gods of Light
  • Thor the Lord of Thunder (side-quest earned the player characters his favor)
  • PC's

VERSUS

  • Anubis and Set the Gods of Darkness
  • Their Dark Minions
  • A partial strength physical manifestation of an Old One

The last fight went into two whole sessions (fourteen hours of real time gaming), with an additional two hours of real time post-campaign conclusions for all the characters, the relationships they developed around the world, and their impact in helping to save it.

A campaign I'll never forget.
