What prominent characters in your world just flat out gave up?

Magister Soran initially approached his assignment in the impoverished Oakenvale District with an overall optimistic attitude, not unfamiliar with such places and hoping the trend of reforms coming out of the senate would lay the foundation for positive change in those infamous regions. Instead, his disposition gradually worsened amid the seemingly endless number of low cunning personalities and the burdensome oppositional culture that gave him no sense of fulfillment. The impetus that sent him headlong into cynicism was the standard reaction to the deaths of fellow magisters in Oakenvale, prompting him to leave for a secretive expedition in the far away arctic lands.

Whether because of guilt for his unceremonious departure or a stubborn remnant of idealism, he resumed offering his assistance to Oakenvale some time after the expedition though he resides elsewhere with his wife and is more selective—more aloof—in how he engages the people of the district.
