What reputation do Gypsies have in America?

I was born in Canada and moved to the US at around 7 years old. We often went back to visit. In the US it's like most the commenters said, fortune tellers and travelers etc.. However, in Canada, they were spoken of in whispers of disdain and disgust. Now sure why though.

We'd be driving along and someone would point out in hushed tones, "The Gypsie King lives there." They'd be pointing at a nondescript house with no seemingly discernible difference from the ones next to it. I was much older when I figured out it was houses that had a Lion statue at the driveway. LOL OK.

They'd say things like their kids are always so dirty. They didn't look any dirty then any other kid looked. I really think it was just the same dynamic that happens everywhere. Culture needs a scapegoat.

I was working in a nursing home when an old lady called me over and whispered to me, pointing at a woman across the room, that she was a Catholic. <gasp!> I was not aware there was a time Catholics were the out group.

I laugh at all the disdain for SJW's because the one's saying it are on a social justice mission trying to fight their ideas. This too shall pass. :p
