Yeah I think the main problem is I really don’t like the premise. Everyone just accepts that books are bad? It’s just stupid to me.
And then he meets this one girl who blows his mind because she likes to stand in the rain and ask questions? And he can’t even fathom the idea of her asking him if he’s happy because it’s such a bizarre question. When he’s already living in a society where everyone is just pleasure seeking. I’ve met so many girls like this who were like homeschool horse girls. She’s like this naive pickme girl keeps telling him how whacky she is and that rocks his world?? I get that he was already having questions about things before he met her but she’s just annoying.
I feel like Brave New World did a way better job of illustrating an idea where people don’t check their pleasure-seeking impulses because at least in that book people still had outlets to make themselves feel smart. Like all the doctor students in the start.
And then the last major issue is the writing style is so fluffy and reads pretentious to me. With such surface level metaphors. Like he says “wow isn’t it terrible that the robot dog can’t think anything unless we tell it it’s okay? That’s so sad.”
I’m sure a lot of people can enjoy this book but I am just not having fun and not getting anything out of it so far.
